Meet Angelika

Travel notes
  • Stands 172 cm, tennis fit
  • Black hair worn long and glossy
  • Brown eyed, in her mid twenties
  • Off duty: jazz, new art, tennis
  • Departs from Mayfair

Seven o'clock at Lancaster Gate, and the revolving door delivers Angelika on schedule. Black hair, glossy and straight, falls well past her shoulders; her eyes, a deep brown, find you before the concierge does; and the athletic 172 cm frame is dressed in something simple and dark. Her style is relaxed glamour rather than costume. A fitted dress, a light jacket, low gold at the ears, heels chosen for a real walk if the evening calls for one. She is in her mid twenties and dresses as if the bar has already been booked, which, by the time she arrives, it usually has.

Confidence sets the pace. Playfulness follows within minutes, often as a sharp aside about whatever painting hangs behind reception, because contemporary art is the subject she can discuss longest. Tennis keeps her quick on her feet and exact with time; a court slot waits for nobody, and neither does she. English is her language, fluent and easy, pitched just right for one guest who is tired of talking or for a table of colleagues who are not. Elegant in company, she is also very good at making a stiff first drink feel like the second.

Her ideal W2 evening starts with new art. Lisson Gallery, on Bell Street a few minutes on foot from Edgware Road station, shows some of the most talked about contemporary artists working today, and on a late afternoon visit Angelika will pick the single piece she would take home and defend that choice until closing. Then a short cab back to your hotel bar, where the playlist leans towards jazz. She keeps the conversation moving, keeps the glasses in view and watches the clock only so you never have to.

Angelika covers the hotels between Edgware Road and the park, a short hop from her Mayfair base. Put your hotel, a start time and the length of booking into one WhatsApp message, and the desk replies inside a quarter of an hour.

After dark · Angelika

An evening with Angelika

Picture 20:30 on a weeknight. Angelika meets you in the lobby with her phone already put away, and her first question is not about work but about the view from your room. Ride the lift up and she will name three landmarks from the window before you have found the minibar. Then back down for one drink at street level, a gin with too much lime, because she says a first sip should wake you up.

By 21:30 the talk has turned to tennis, to the match she lost on Sunday and the rematch she has already booked. She asks what you play and will not accept nothing as an answer. Around eleven the bar thins out. She suggests the park railings for ten minutes of air, then a nightcap upstairs with the curtains open to the dark trees of Kensington Gardens.

Angelika, in brief

Early, before the city wakes up. One hour on court at seven and I am alert for everything that follows, including a late finish in a hotel bar.

Something cold and a very large breakfast. Nobody should talk to me before the eggs arrive, and after that I am delightful.

Jazz, quietly, so you can still hear each other. Silence makes people whisper, and whispering makes everyone look like they are plotting something.

This log only grows when a client who actually met Angelika writes in afterwards. The desk reads every note before it appears, prints it under a first name and the month of the booking, and never drafts one itself. Empty for now is the honest state.
